Atomfall: How To Find A Metal Detector

Mar 25, 2025

Atomfall is a game that really goes out of its way to bake British culture right into the experience. Some are more on the nose, like the cricket bats and the teapots scattered everywhere.

The best games set in Ol' Blighty, from a Sunday drive to the apocalypse.

But there are a few more subtle nods to British culture that might go over people's heads. For example, players can get their hands on a Metal Detector, which is a nod to the TV comedy show, Detectorists.

It's a fun reference, but it's also one that doubles as an important mechanic in the game, as players can use this Metal Detector to find hidden caches of supplies and key items, provided they know where to look.

So, to help you get your hands on a Metal Detector, and teach you how to use the contraption, we have a handy little guide that will make you a true Detectorist in seconds flat.

There are multiple areas where you can pick up a Metal Detector in the early game, so depending on whether you want to trade for the privilege of owning one, or are willing to go searching for one in the wild, here are some locations to check out:

When you begin your adventure in Wyndham, you'll start in Slatten Dale, an area that is full of great stuff for players to kickstart their survival crafting experience, but equally, it tends to be guarded by outlaws and the traps they have set.

So, it's best to try and source your early-game items by lying low and staying out of hostile areas. One such area that is a great place to grab some early essentials is the Trader Camp, located at coordinates (26.4E, 79.1N).

Here, you will find Molly, a Trader who will offer you some key info if you agree to trade with her. It is more than worth your while, as they have great gear.

They have a Shiv Recipe, a Torch, an Atomic Battery, and, as you might have gathered, a Metal Detector.

It's considered a pretty low-value item, so you can pick up this item along with the Torch in exchange for one Molotov Cocktail, and you can add ammo to even out the trade.

Just to give you all the options available, the barkeeper at The Grendel's Head in Wyndham Village also has a Metal Detector you can purchase. So, if you prefer, head straight to the village.

Your second option is one that is completely free and happens to be in the starting area of Slatten Dale. However, it is also the area that will likely pose the most danger to players.

This Metal Detector is found on the body of a fallen Outlaw, and can be looted from their corpse. However, their body is close to a body of water filled with leeches and close to the Waterwheels, Railyard, and the nearby Outlaw Camp.

It's fairly easy to get there if you're decent at the stealth approach, and then you can get out of there to avoid getting spotted but bear in mind that a firefight could ensue at any moment.

Then, lastly, you have an option that is both free and poses very little in the way of immediate danger, but the caveat is that you will need to enter Skethermoor, which is under Protocol rule.

This area can be accessed via the Slate Mine in Slatten Dale, or you could cozy up with Captain Sims and be given free access to the area. The choice is yours.

Then, once there, you'll want to head to Brinsop Manor at coordinates (39.4E, 77.5N). Here, you'll need to look around the grounds, and in the area not including the hedge maze, you'll find a body with a Metal Detector.

Now that you have the Metal Detector, it's probably best that we explain how it works.

This is an item that doesn't need to be assigned to a hotkey, as you will hear it beep when there is something nearby that registers with the Detector. Then, you can press the button prompt on the screen to equip the Metal Detector.

From there, all you need to do is hold L2/LT to hover it over the ground, and you need to keep the red light on the detector central while walking toward the burial spot. You'll know you're in the right spot when the machine starts beeping wildly.

Then, you can press R2/RT to dig, and you'll usually find a Cache or a Lunchbox with some useful items.

That's really as there is to it. It's very easy to use, but you'd be surprised just how much of a game-changer this can be when you're desperate for some items in a pinch.

Atomfall is shaping up to be a nuclear-fuelled spectacle, and we stay down with Ben Fisher to find out more about this amazing prospect.

This guide explains how to find the Signal Redirector in Atomfall.

Here are some incredible games that, on paper, seemed like they were destined for failure.

If at first you don't succeed, update until you do.

Notoriously hellish and oh-so annoying.

Kingdom Hearts 4 needs some new worlds from every corner of Disney's sizable catalog.

Although they may have been wildly successful, these overrated video game consoles haven't necessarily stood the test of time.
